  • Spread of Flame for Reaction to Fire Tests for Evaluate Combustion Characteristics

    Product introduction

    Sprea of flame tester is used to evaluate combustion characteristics of rail materials and ship materials and measures spread rate of flame, flame for ignition by distances, CFE (Critical Flux at Extinguishment) and total heat release. This test method is originated from ISO 5658-2 (Reaction to fire tests Spread of flame- Part 2 Lateral spread on building products in vertical configuration) and measures combustion characteristics of vertical specimen (155mmX800mm).

    Technical parameters

    1. The test instrument consists of four main components: a set of radiant panel holders, a set of sample holders, and they are connected together to make the test sample together with the radiant panel, the sample holder, and the pilot burner to form the required structure;
    2. The radiant panel provides a radiation surface having a size of about 480 mm X 280 mm, and a wire mesh screen is provided in front of the radiation surface to increase the irradiance;
    3. The blower is used to provide the air source of the radiant panel, and the inverter is used to adjust the mode;
    4. The propane mass flow controller is used to adjust the gas source, and the venturi mixer is mixed with the air to provide a combustion gas source for the radiant panel;
    5. Provide a porous calibration plate and a sliding heat flow meter moving track to detect whether the heat radiation flux meets the standard requirements;
    6. A water-cooled heat radiation flux sensor for measuring a heat radiation flux curve of the radiation plate;
    7. Portable water cooling cycle device, can take away the heat of the surface of the heat flow meter;
    8. Ceramic tube burner, which can directly act on the surface of the test specimen;
    9. Using the rotor flow meter adjustment mode, can provide ceramic tube burner mixed combustion gas;
    10. Mass flow controller, which can easily measure the heat of methane by measuring the critical heat flux;
    11. According to the IMO test standard, a thermocouple device can be provided for measuring relevant parameters such as heat release rate;
    12. Methane calibration burner and methane mass flow controller, can provide 1KW and 3KW flame temperature;
    13. During the test, the camera can observe and save the measurement status in the program;
    14. The angle can be adjusted to observe the mirror. The flame spread rate can be observed through the glass mirror and the sample during the test, and can be automatically recorded by the foot switch;
    15. Computer and standard test software for controlling the test process.

    Product Feature and Application

    1.The apparatus consists of a radiant panel having dimensions of 280 x 483 mm, mounted vertically, and making an angle of 15° with the specimen.
    2.The orientation of the panel results in an incident radiant flux that decreases from 50 kW/m² at one end to approximately 1 kW/m² at the other end of the specimen.
    3.The sample is ignited by a non-impinging, gas/air pilot flame.
    4.Viewing rakes placed at a 50-mm spacing along the specimen.
    5.Heat Flux Meter - for setting the irradiance level at the surface of the specimens, the range from 0-50KW/m2.
    6.Portable water cooling system without need for waterworks and plumbing when using the Heat Flux meter.
    7.The radiant burner system is fully automatic, with spark ignition and safety interlocks.
    8.MFC (Mass Flow Controller) to easily measure the heat amount of methane gas in measuring critical heat flux.
    9.Camcorder to observe and save test conditions in a program during tests.
    10.To meet the IMO specification a stack is fitted complete with thermopile for estimating heat release rate.
    11.Records the spread rate of flame after this records ignition and extinguishment time of flame for each distance of specimens. And the other test results is Heat for ignition (MJ/㎡), Heat for sustained burning (MJ/㎡), Critical flux at extinguishment (kW/㎡), Average heat for sustained burning (MJ/㎡), Total heat release (kW),Peak heat release rate (kW) .

    Application:Used for building materials, high-speed train materials, and the combustion characteristics of marine materials, measuring the spread speed of the flame and the ignition heat and total heat release according to distance and CEF (critical heat radiation flow).

    Product Details

    ISO 5658-2 : Reaction to fire tests Spread of flame - Part 2 Lateral spread on building products in vertical configuration
    IMO Resolution A. 653(16): Recommendation on fire test procedures for flammability of bulkhead, ceiling and deck finish materials
    ASTM E 1317 : Standard test method for flammability of marine surface finishes
    This test method is used to evaluate the combustion characteristics of vertically mounted test objects according to ISO 5658-2 and IMO Res.653. At the same time, it satisfies the GB/T 28752-2012 flame spread test method on the vertical surface. The test object is exposed to the appropriate heat sink area given by the heat sink gas combustion type, and then the signal value is measured in mV using a calibrated thermocouple when combustion occurs. In addition, the ignition time is also recorded and the flame burning time of the object to be measured is recorded in accordance with the distance of the test object, and the spread speed of the flame is also recorded. Other test items include ignition heat (MJ/m2), continuous combustion heat (MJ/m2), critical heat radiation flow (kW/m2), average heat for continuous combustion, and total heat dissipation (kW).
